Casablanca was the site of the ninth running of the Courir Pour Le Plaisir (Run For Fun). Expecting 25,000 runners, race organizers were pleased to have nearly 30,000 take part. Beginning as a five kilometer race, it has grown into the biggest women’s race held in a Muslim country with international participants. Moroccan runner, Nawal El Moutawakel, began the race in 1993. El Moutawakel and some of the international celebrities running the race visited at the Courir Pour Las Vie (Run for Life) project near Casablanca. Many of the girls, greeting the visitors, ran the race on Sunday.

Musicians had their day, or we should say night, in the spotlight on May seventh at the National Music Day festival. Celebrated by many of Morocco’s musical artists who gathered together for the event, established musicians were happy to share their talents through song and dance. The musicians all agreed that they hope that many more such ensembles will take place. Moroccan music has needed a sort of revival to bring it back to its former glory.

You will soon hear the vroom vroom of Harley Hogs in Morocco. This popular brand of motorcycle as well as Keeway and Maxxstar Motorcycles will be seen on the country roads soon. Casablanca Harley-Davidson is planning a grand opening in its dealership towards the end of May. This is the first Harley-Davidson Motorcycle dealership in Morocco. Not only will the bikes be offered, a complete service center with a parts warehouse will be opening, too. Along with the service center, Harley-Davidson trained mechanics will be on site. Hog enthusiasts will be able to get their favorite accessories. The Hog Chapter of Casablanca, a type of Harley club for fans and riders, will also begin – the first of its kind in Morocco.

Morocco’s image is changing on the silver screen if director, Nour-Eddine Lakhmari has his way. He is filming a new story in Casablanca about two poor friends. Not only is he using local street boys to portray his characters, he is showing a Morocco that is rarely seen on the screen. Most people have seen Morocco shown as a glamorous place in such films as Lawrence of Arabia, Troy and others, that used Morocco as a backdrop. Mr. Lakhmari is putting a real Moroccan face to world. People, here, want to see their lives not the lives that Europe or the US paints of them. Home grown stories have been successful in films lately. Many poorer neighborhoods of the northern cities have all the ingredients for movies. Everyday life of joblessness, insecurity, betrayal, and hopelessness is fodder for stories of life as it really is. This is what the film makers are showing to the cinema world today.

Today is the last day of the 2nd Annual Titan Desert MTB Marathon, a six day adventure bike race in the south of Morocco that started on April 24, 2007. Most of the bikers have ventured from Spain, Italy, Belgium, and even the US in order to participate in the grueling 450KM (280-miles) race.
