A Vision with Brazil
A vision of cooperation between developing countries is of importance to King of Morocco, Mohamed VI, along with other leaders in South America, such as the President of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula de Silva. The two leaders relize how future collaborations will benefit both sides of the Atlantic. Representing Morocco, Mohamed Benaissa, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, started his tour in Brazil and will visit ten other Latin America countries before returning to Morocco.
Minister Benaissa spoke about the next Summit of South American-Arab countries to be held in Morocco next year. World Peace, trade and investment are the major themes set for the conference. A meeting in July has already been scheduled to discuss cooperation between Morocco and Brazil.
One of his Majesty King Mohamed VI’s goals is to explain the royal initiative aimed at solving the Western Sahara problem – an ongoing conflict of more than thirty years. The resolution states that the Western Sahara would have all the attributes of self-governance. Such things as health, education, teaching, culture, public works, trade, and resources would fall under the territories. The flag, currency, foreign relations and defense, however, would come under the central government.
Another interesting subject of worthy note was the focus on how trade between the two nations might be increased. Both sides believe that a south-south cooperation may set a new standard for open trade that will help promote greater world peace.
Additionally, Brazil has been invited to invest in Morocco’s growing tourism sector. Morocco receives 6.5 million tourists per year and hopes to get that number up to 10 million by 2010. Morocco hopes Brazil might participate in the fields of infrastructure, roads, airports, housing, agriculture and fishing.
