Arab Support for Moroccan Melilla & Sebta

The Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) and the League of Arab States have both come out in support of Morocco regaining control of Spanish cities of Sebta and Meillilia in northern Morocco. King Juan Carlos of Spain caused a furor when he visited the two cities during his recent trip to Morocco.

Many people protested the visit including Moroccan Prime Minister Abbas El Fassi. King Mohammed VI expressed his dismay and condemned the visit. His majesty labeled it as unprecedented and illustrates Spain’s longing for a time passed. He asked that Spain engage in frank dialogue that is honest, responsible and forward looking. He says such dialogue should guarantee Moroccan sovereign rights and include Spain’s interests. The OIC called the visit regrettable and encouraged the Spanish government to try to get this matter settled by diplomatic means.

Cairo based, League of Arab States reminded Spain of the recommendations made in 1976, that the issue be solved by diplomatic means. Dialogues should take place in an atmosphere of friendliness and within the framework of Moroccan-Spanish relations. The League reiterated that it was following developments of King Juan Carlos’ visit to Sebta and Melillia. Both the OIC and the Arab League consider Morocco’s claim to them legitimate.
