Disabled Children Given Chance

With groups such as Handicap International working in Morocco, the country is able to focus more of its resources on children with disabilities. Moroccan students, who would have had to once resort to menial labor, or even begging, might now be given the chance they deserve. A new program that will be implemented over a five-year time span will see that Moroccan children with disabilities are given an equal chance in society and life.

With a vast amount of illiteracy in its population, the Moroccan Ministry of Education is attempting to revamp the way the public education sector operates. A recent survey has recently revealed that those with disabilities are not receiving an equal opportunity in the classroom, which inhibits their chances of employment or further education following their primary years. Families with disabled children in Morocco often feel that the resources offered by public schools is insufficient – that they’d rather their children not go to school, which is why only 30% of 225,000 disabled children attend.

The Ministry of Education runs nearly 200 classes at almost 50 different locations, which serves only 2,093 students. The programs, according to the Secretariat of State for the Disabled, currently serves disabled children in major city areas, but those in more rural areas do not have access to the same personal focus upon their education or well being.

The program, which is being hailed by the international community as a necessary step in the complete betterment of Morocco, says that one goal of the program is to help society not shun its disabled, help families with disabled members, and to help empower those with disabilities. Additionally, the program is going to target teachers by providing them with training and workshops on how to adapt their own pedagogies even more, even to the point of using alternative, nouveau methods. Both the physically, mentally, and hearing-impaired children will benefit from the new program.

Clearly, the action is one that will help Morocco in its overall goals to keep up with the ever-changing world and to help those less fortunate in the process. Attention will be drawn to all parties involved hoping that the educational processes will funnel down benefiting the disabled youth in the country.
