Driss Chraibi Praised in Morocco

With the recent death of writer Driss Chraibi, who passed at the age of 81 in Paris, King Mohammed VI in Morocco gave a personal message to his family. Publicly, the king announced, Driss Chraibi is one of the pioneers of the Maghreban Literature in French, a language that he mastered so brilliantly that his works appear among the World Literature wonders.

Morocco mourned the death of one of their most beloved and prolific authors. His books, which include La Civilisation Ma Mere, which depicts French colonialism and a childhood growing up in Morocco’s turbulent past. He is also the author of Pass Simple, which garnished world controversy for its political themes.

The Moroccan king went on to state that Chraibi forced people to look a new type of lliterature and that his works belong to the national and international literary canon.

He is considered the father of the modern Moroccan novel and set a new standard for autobiographical sketches. His works further delved into the rights of mothers and children living in an Arab society. His works have been translated into Italian, English, Arabic, German, and Russian. He has won the Mediterranean Africa award, the French-Arab Friendship Prise and the Modello Prize.
