EU Commissioner Visiting Morocco
Touring the maritime and fisheries during his visit in Morocco, Commissioner Joe Borg from the European Union will meet with Moroccan leaders including Prime Minister Jettou, and Fisheries Minister Laenser. During his first visit, he will discuss mutual concerns that Morocco and the EU have about sustainable fisheries. He will inform the Moroccan leaders about the move towards maritime policy for the EU, strengthening the cooperation of Morocco and the EU under the Fisheries Partnership Agreement (FPA) and in other regional fisheries organizations. Mr. Borg will invite Morocco to be part of the consultation process.
He spoke of his delight to be in Morocco for the first time. He commented on how Morocco is a valued partner of the EU in many ways. He feels that working with the local leaders will result in better management of the fisheries of both sides and better protection of the marine environment. He is looking to gain better understanding of the fishing industry as it is in Morocco.
Morocco and the EU are hoping to build a Euro-Mediterranean Trade Area in which the signing in 2000 of the EU-Moroccan Association Agreement was a key step. A guest of Moroccan Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, Mr. Laenser, Mr. Borg will discuss the implementation of the FPA. Other items on the agenda include how to strengthen the already good ties that the EU and Morocco have in the General Fisheries Commission for both the Mediterranean and the International Commission for the Conservation of the Atlantic Tuna. Discussion on the progress of the Commission’s consultation on future maritime policies and how the partners can work together will be included.
While in Morocco, Mr. Borg plans on visiting Moroccan processors, scientists, and fishermen in Larache and M’Dig. The visit will include Moulay Bousselham lagoon, an international important coastal wetland that falls under the protection of the Ramsar Convention.
A formal meeting and joint press conference with Minister Laenser on Monday will conclude his visit.
