Free Press in Morocco

With the banning of a recent newspaper due to its views, a new Moroccan tabloid called Au Fait is launching its free, full-color daily in an attempt to gain widespread distribution that will first be available in Casablanca, Rabat, and Marrakesh.

Au Fait was actually started by a web service company known as Devocean, based in Canada. The editorial team will at first be comprised of two full-time editors and one journalist. The daily will include only 10% original content, but will base the rest of its material from the Maghreb Arabe Press and Agence France Presse. The publishing director claims that the newspaper’s mission is not to provide thought-provoking analysis of major world events, but is meant to be more of a quick read.

The sales team is made up of more than seven full-time ad hunters, who are searching far and wide to bulk up each day’s release with ads geared at Moroccan and European society. The success of the daily will be seen over the next year. Currently, a gap exists in Morocco because newspapers don’t necessarily make news available to the average citizen and consumer. As Morocco hopes one day for a fully free nonpartisan press, Au Fait might put them one step closer to attaining what many consider would be a beneficial element in society.
