Kiteboarding Record in Morocco

The all-too famous kiteboarder Kirsty Jones astonished her fans and the Guinness Book of World Records with her solo nine-hour and 140-mile (85km) crossing from Lanzarote to Morocco. Her course took her past Tarfaya and along the Northern Western Sahara of Morocco. Not all of her trip was smooth sailing. Choppy waters, flat sails, and quirky wind nearly caused her to forfeit.

The journey was painful at times Kirsty admitted. She claims that the “wind gods” were on her side and at the four-hour mark, when the winds started picking up again, she knew the ride would be rough and tiring, but doable. During her free-style performance, the wind gods truly smiled as the sky cleared, the sun shone, and dolphins began jumping all around her.

It wasn’t for eight hours that Kirsty Jones even saw land – which frustrated and scared her because she wasn’t sure if she was on track. Fear struck her even more when she saw a big fin pop up out of the water that ended up coupled pilot whales breaching. Although the water is cold at this time of year, her S-Core 3mm wetsuit kept her plenty warm and her Flexfoil Iron Kite did its job with flying colors.

Jones’ goal was to raise money for sport equipment for Morocco while bringing together different worlds for a common cause. She worked alongside Youths United so that a small surf club in Tarfaya would have the equipment it needed to teach local kids about kiteboarding and windsurfing in Morocco. She hopes that others will follow her lead in raising awareness about equal recreational opportunities and sports for all.
