Maternal Deaths Drop In Morocco

Maternal deaths are down. With the help of UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund), women dying during childbirth has dropped. In 2004, approximately 220 mothers died giving birth in Morocco. That rate had come down from more than 300 in 1986. Two deaths have been recorded in the past four years. This is all thanks to a program developed under the UNFPA. Mothers-to-be coming National Hospital for Maternal Health Orangers are given a little blue book by the Ministry of Health. This booklet documents the pre-natal visits and has information on previous pregnancies and any complications and problems. Medications taken by the mother are also listed. Information about pregnancy and motherhood are also included. Most women now using the public health system have the little blue books.

Women using the services at the National Hospital for Maternal Health are usually satisfied with services offered. Prenatal consultations, emergency obstetric care, and gynecological exams are free. On average, 20-25 babies are borne every day at the hospital.

The fund has allowed Morocco to improve its capacity to handle obstetric emergencies and cut down on maternal deaths. It has brought a decrease in pregnancy ill health. Skilled attendance at birth is now about 60%. Resources are being put into training rural midwives. Helping them to recognize complications and refer their patients to regional hospitals are goals of the program. Morocco still has rural areas that have little or no health services. UNFPA is helping to bring assistance to those areas especially. Morocco, with the help of major donors, has launched an initiative for human development. Some of the main goals are more investment in human health, including education (especially for girls), generation of jobs and reproductive health.
