Moroccan King Administers Oath
King Mohammed VI had a busy day on July 31. Tuesday was the eighth anniversary of the King’s enthronement. In a speech was given as part of the Throne Day Activities by His Highness. As Supreme Commander and Chief of Staff of the Royal Armed Forces,King Mohammed VI, praised the military and promised better living conditions for the troops and their families. His Majesty addressed his remarks to the officers who had recently graduated from various military and security schools throughout Morocco. These men were there to take part in the Throne Day celebrations. While expressing his gratitude for the many ways the military members have served Morocco, he named this graduating class after the late Sheikh Maaoulainin, a leader among the Saharan Tribes known for his struggles against colonialism. The Sheikh died in 1910. The King expressed his pride in the modern training the officers receive. He promised that the army would keep receiving such training.
In his role as, Commander of the faithful, he received the oaths of Minister of Interior, the Walis (high officials), the governors and other top officials of the provinces and prefectures. This pact between the King, and the people has been part of Moroccan tradition since olden times. The oath of allegiance was founded by Idriss I in year 172 of the Hegira as he was named King of Morocco. The “Baiaa†or allegiance oath has been perpetuated by the Ulemas (theologians) to the present day. People pledge their support to the throne and loyalty to the King. The King promises to preserve the rights of the citizens, defend the sovereignty, independence and integrity of Morocco while seeking for the country’s prosperity and progress as a nation. The allegiance ceremony closed the official celebration.
King Mohammed VI received many letters of praise and congratulations from world leaders on this special day. Some hailed the reforms undertaken by His Majesty in bringing Morocco into modernity. French President Sarkozy was among those expressing congratulations on Morocco’s growth under King Mohammed. President Sarkozy also remarked that under His Majesty’s leadership, Morocco has had growth in economic, political and social areas. He praised the King for his personal involvement in the human rights campaign of all Moroccans. Among other leaders sending congratulatory messages was Algerian President, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who promised to work with King Mohammed VI to consolidate the relations between the two countries in fields of common interest. His remarks came with praise for the positive and important changes undertaken in Morocco.
