Moroccan Musicians

Musicians had their day, or we should say night, in the spotlight on May seventh at the National Music Day festival. Celebrated by many of Morocco’s musical artists who gathered together for the event, established musicians were happy to share their talents through song and dance. The musicians all agreed that they hope that many more such ensembles will take place. Moroccan music has needed a sort of revival to bring it back to its former glory.

The participants shared professional unity, friendship and reassessed the musical scene of Morocco. One central goad was to plan for the future, to have many more events, and to further the knowledge of Moroccan music to young people in the country. Some of the more established musicians discussed the challenges facing music teachers: whether to work on their own careers or help young, struggling artists learn about the field. Many established musicians agreed that young Moroccan generation seems more interested in music of other cultures rather than their own.

Many feel that Moroccan music can rise into mainstream society once again. The Ministry of Culture will address the problem and work in collaboration with artists to bring young Moroccan musicians to their full cultural potential. For many years it seemed that no one was interested in protecting Moroccan music from piracy - a new issue because copied music is sold on the street. Musicians from Morocco should be proud of themselves and their heritage. Musicians have not had the support they needed in the past to make a stable living from their art. Once music is encouraged, then it will flourish. Moroccan artists need a chance to display their varying talents.
