Morocco, BIE Exhibition Hopeful
Morocco will send its Minister of Industry and Trade, Salah Edinne Mezouar, and Mayor Dahman Derman of Tangier to Brazil to seek support of Morocco’s hope to host the International Exhibition of the Bureau International Exhibitions (BIE) in 2012. Established under UN guidelines, BIE has its headquarters in Paris. Brazil is one of the ninety-eight member countries that will vote, next December, on the location of the next exhibition.
An important event in the art world, an exhibition is held every two years along with the World Exhibition every 5 years. BIE’s mission is to organize art exhibitions using United Nation’s principles. Morocco is one of three countries seeking to hold the exhibition. The choice will be made using a ballot system.
Bringing the exhibition to Morocco may also bring work and development. Revenues from exhibition could be channeled into Morocco’s infrastructure benefiting such things social work and habitation. Hosting the BIE could also help Morocco’s burgeoning tourist industry. The exhibition would probably attract nearly 6 million additional visitors.
Morocco is working to attract 10 million tourists by 2010; 6.5 million visited the country last year. Morocco would be the first Arab, African and Muslim country to hold the exhibition as well as being a southern country. According Morocco’s ambassador to Brazil, Farida Jaïdi, the theme chosen by Moroccan government will show the different means that people use to connect to other parts of the world, all that make the global community that much more connected.
Minister Mezouar and Mayor Derman will be in Brasilia from April 8-11. They will travel to other BIE member countries in South America to ask for their support of Morocco’s request to host the 2012 exhibition.
