Morocco-France Partnership
French President Sarkozy announced that his country would help Morocco build nuclear power plants. This would give Morocco a boost in its ability to keep its economy growing. As it stands today, Morocco lacks the energy reserves it needs to raise the standard of living for all of its population and sustain industrial growth..
France has committed to a partnership to help build up of Morocco’s civil nuclear energy resources. At a dinner in Marrakech, President Sarkozy announced that Moroccan Energy Minister Amina Benkhadra would be in France soon for meetings between the two countries. He has taken part in several French-Moroccan business dealings, including one for the French company, Areva, which builds the equipment for extraction of uranium from phosphoric acid.
Mr. Sarkozy made the point that developing nations can have civil nuclear power as long as internationally recognized rules are followed. Morocco has received expertise from France and the United States. France is taking its help one step further to help build a power station near Marrakesh. By helping Morocco build its civil nuclear program, France is showing other third nations such as Iran, that civil uses of nuclear power can be had if international conventions are followed, while confrontations can be avoided and cooperation possible. Mr. Sarkozy made his remarks in an address to the Moroccan parliament during his 3 day visit to the kingdom.
