Morocco Loses To Guinea

by Carole Morris on February 6, 2008

Morocco lost to Guinea, 3-2 in their second game of the African Cup of Nations tournament. Morocco’s chances of getting to the next round are now in jeopardy.

Following a short skirmish midfield, the Guinea team scored the games first point with Guinean captain Feindounou free kicking 30-meters in the 11th minute. The Atlas Lions were unable to answer the point in the first half. Morocco played good football, but inaccuracy prevented them from converting.

Guinean player, Ismael Bangoura intercepted a pass from Mansare and put the ball across the goalkeeper, extending the Guinea team’s lead. Ten minutes later Moroccan striker Hicham Aoucherouane answered with a huge strike from the left side of the Guinean box. This brought a breath of hope to Morocco’s Atlas Lions.

In the 63rd minute, a Guinean player was brought down and the team was awarded a penalty. Feindounou made a shot to the goalkeeper’s left to increase the score. Moments after scoring Feindounou earned the dubious honor of becoming the first player to be red-carded at the 2008 African Cup by lashing out Moroccan player Amin-al-Erbate. This could cost him a two game suspension.

One minute before the final whistle, Abdeslem Quaddou made a second goal for Morocco. But it wasn’t enough for the Atlas Lions. The result leaves both Guinea and Morocco with three points in Group A. Morocco will play hosts Ghana in their third game. Anything less than a victory will send the Atlas Lions back home to Morocco.
