Morocco Plants 20 Million Trees
Morocco planted twenty million trees as part of a drive sponsored by the United Nations and World Agroforestry Center to get one billion trees planted worldwide. Reaching the goal to have the trees planted by the international meeting on climate change scheduled for next month has been a milestone according to Achim Steiner, Executive Director of the UN Environment Progam.
The announcement was made in advance of the many delegates planning to travel to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The Billion Tree campaign was begun at the UNEP headquarters in Nairobi last November. While the one billion tree goal has been reached, the campaign expects some countries such as China , Spain and others to announce that even more trees have been planted.
Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai, the Kenyan Green Belt founder and co-patron of the campaign explained that while pleased with the results, he cautioned that the campaign must go on. Half of the trees planted in the program were planted by private individuals, while more than ten percent were planted by the private sector including businesses. The rest were national planted by national programs in various counties.
Morocco has been trying to reclaim forest from Morocco deforestation areas that have been destroyed by the demand for lumber and the exploitation of the forest resources. In order to keep up with replanting program nearly 40 trees are planted in Moroccan plant nurseries in the forest zones. One of the trees being replanted in order to save them is Morocco’s Argan tree.
