Morocco-Senegal Diplomatic Row Ends
Morocco and Senegal ended their diplomatic row following serious talks between the two governments. Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Taleb Fassi Fibri, and his Senegalese counterpart, Dr. Cheikh Tidane Gadio, decided on the immediate return their ambassadors to their respective posts.
This insures the mission of service which has united the two countries for centuries will move forward. This ended a dispute that was started by remarks made by a former Senegalese foreign minister, Jaques Baudin that supported the Algerian-backed Polisario separatist movement.
Morocco recalled its ambassador for three days to get further explanations on the remarks. Senegal followed suit. Morocco considered Mr. Baudin’s remarks as hostile. Senegalese Socialist Party had supported Morocco’s sovereignty over the Western Sahara when it was in power. This seemed to be against their earlier statements.
Dr Gadio’s statement dismissed the allegations that Morocco wanted to exert economic blackmail on Senegal as revolting and unacceptable. He denied that there was a crisis between the two countries or any type of economic or commercial bone of contention. He restated his countries support of Moroccan territorial integrity and reiterated that such support was not negotiable.
