Morocco Strikes Gold

Morocco struck gold for the first time. Moroccan runner Mohamed Fadil took the gold medal in the half marathon race in Bangkok in the World University Games. National Stadium at Thammasat University was the venue for the race. Fellow countryman Najim El Gady took the silver, and Japan’s entry came in third. Mohamed Fadil’s time was 1 hour, 5 minutes and 49 seconds. He beat his team mate by 25 seconds.

North Korea joined the top winners for the first time, too. Their racer Kim Kum Ok won the woman’s race with Japan coming in second. Jong Yong Ok got the bronze. The races were run in the early morning to get away form the oppressive August heat and humidity. Runners in the men’s and women’s races were drenched by the time the race ended.

In the gold medal hunt, Russia was ahead with eight, China has seven, and the United States garnered four. Morocco and North Korea, both, have one. There are more competitions to be held in water polo, badminton, fencing and taekwondo. The 100 meter races were scheduled later on Saturday.
