Morocco came out on top of a football match played in Malawi. By doing so the Moroccans became the first team to qualify for a trip to Ghana to play in the African Nations Cup in 2008. Striker Bouchaib al-Moubaraki sent the ball into an unguarded net that gave the Atlas Lions a 1-0 victory over the home team. Morocco’s team has a seven point advantage in Group 12. They have beaten Malawi and Zimbabwe, both, at home and away.
Last year, the Atlas Lions placed third place behind Egypt and Ivory Coast in African Nations Cup. The Moroccan team under Coach Mohamed Fakhir has approximately 7 months to be ready to play in next year’s tournament. Last year, the team never scored a goal and managed to place barely above Libya. They want a better finish in 2008.
Another team headed for the biennial football tournament is Sudan who beat out Seychelles with a 2-0 victory. This will be Sudan’s first appearance since 1976.
