Morocco Trip: Things To Bring

by Sam on November 18, 2008

Morocco, located in the Northern part of the African continent, is inhabited by 27 million people. There could quite possibly be more than that living there as it occupies 710,850 square kilometers of land. While 98.7% of the inhabitants in Morocco are of the Sunni Muslim faith, there are other religions – namely Christianity and Judaism – practiced there.  Arabic is the principle language, followed by the native language of the Berbers, then French and Spanish. It is ruled by a king with some democratic functions such as a parliment and the country itself enjoys a fair amount of free speech.

As you can imagine, Morocco is a country that is steeped in deep traditions and culture. Visiting this nation is an exciting prospect for many people and while you are packing there are definitely some things you are going to want to make sure you bring along.

The culture of the Moroccan people is significantly different than Western culture and many things are not easily available there as they are elsewhere in the world. Being prepared when you first step into the country will make your stay there even more enjoyable than if you had to worry about purchasing items that you can’t find.

Things To Bring to A Morocco Trip:

Visiting Morocco will be a culture shock to some people. They may find that sleeping arrangements are unusual, cleanliness levels are drastically different, and the food is unique and exotic. With a travel to Morocco, you may want to consider packing the following items to make sure that your trip is the best it can be.

Liquid soap – When you are traveling from city to city, you will not always find soap at the places you will have to use for facilities. Having liquid soap handy will allow you to make sure you hands are clean and you don’t have to worry about carrying around a wet, slimy bar.

Travel size toiletries – toothpaste, shampoo, body lotion, deodorant, sunscreen and anything else you can think of that comes in a small size are a good idea as most only come in large size packages in Morocco for an inflated price.

Bag of salt – Morocco is a country that is hot and includes the Sahara desert  You will drink plenty of water to keep hydrated, but you also need to make sure your natural saline levels do not get depleted.

Bottle of lemon – As mentioned above, you’ll be drinking plenty of water while in Morocco.  By adding a little bit of lemon to your water, you’ll perk up your drink and make the water a little less boring.

Baseball cap – A baseball cap will keep your head protected from the hot sun that is found in Morocco, keeping you from getting sunburned.  Also, most caps or hats you find in the medinas of Morocco are decorated and you may not like anything you find there. A gardening or hiking hat may do just fine too.

Sandals – A good, broken-in pair of open toed sandals will keep your feet cool and comfortable as you walk around the country. Make sure you can walk long distances in them without them irritating your feet.

Paperback novel – In some of the smaller villages or towns, there is very little nightlife. Some hotels have televisions that only show local television shows. Bringing a book with you will help you pass away the evenings – assuming you’re not so tired that you just fall asleep as soon as your head hits the pillow.

Silk sleeping bag – if you are traveling on a tight budget, you may not be sleeping in the cleanest beds available.  By having a sleeping bag with you, you can sleep peacefully in a clean environment.

Shorts or zip-off pants that can be turned to shorts

Bag for souvenirs

Bag for dirty clothing

Neck pouch – This is a safe place for you to keep your money, tickets, passports, and anything else you do not want to fall to pickpockets or thieves.  By being able to keep it inside your clothing, you will be able to keep a better eye on your property.

Survival money – Hide this in your luggage just in case something happens to the money you are carrying around your neck.

Sun screen

Lip balm with UV protection

Guide book – It’s nice to have a map of a town or a layout of the country so you’ll know where you’re at exactly at any given time.

By making sure you have all of the items you will need to bring with you to Morocco already packed in your luggage when you arrive, you will be ready for anything. You’ll be able to relax and not worry about the smaller things that shouldn’t plague you while taking your annual vacation.
