Morocco has a new government in place. It came, however, not without some tough bargaining. New faces in the government picture include seven women but no one from the Islamic party. Interior Minister Chakib Benmoussa kept his job while Foreign Minister Mohamed Benaissa lost his, replaced by Taieb Fassi Fihri.
Eight of the new ministers come from the Istiqlal. Nawal el Moutawakil was among the women named. She is the new Sports Mininster. Amina Benkhadra was named as the minister of Energy, Water and Environment. Seven of the ministers come from the Socialist Union or Popular Forces. Eight came from the Istiquial party of Prime Minister Abbas El Fassi.
The forming of the new government followed the elections held in September. The Istiqial won 52 of the seats in parliament while the Islamic Party won 46. In the negotiations for the new cabinet, Minister El Fassi tried to keep his new cabinet as close to the previous majority, which included a coalition between Istiqial an The Socialist Union of Popular Forces.
