Results Positive On Morocco-EU Relationship
Good things are happening between Morocco and the European Union. Negotiations are serving great results because of the strong relationship according to Moroccan Foreign Minister, Taieb Fassi Fibri. EU’s Commissioner for External Relations and Neighborhood Policy, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, is visiting Morocco. Among the goals for her visit is to strengthen bilateral relations and shore up multi-dimensional ties.
Morocco is seeking Advanced Status with the EU. The kingdom feels that such a relationship is fundamental. Ties between Morocco have deepened with such things as the association agreement between it and the EU. Other important agreements include the European Neighborhood Policy and in the regional development within the Barcelona Process.
Moroccan Foreign Minister, Taieb Fassi Fibri said that the visit by Benita Ferrero-Waldner is a chance for outlining what decisions must be made to assure that Morocco’s confirmation of Advanced Status in the fall of 2008.
Mrs. Ferrero described the bilateral relationship between Morocco and the EU as privileged. She called Morocco a pioneer and key partner of EU working within the framework of Euro-Mediterranean policies. In her remarks, she mentioned that Morocco and the EU are undergoing a time of change in developing dialogue and deepening cooperation.
The EU representative praised Morocco for deciding to take part in the bilateral talks on opening up to trade, services and investments. She also applauded Morocco’s subscription to EU’s declaration on foreign policies and common security goals. Referring to the Advanced Status that Morocco is seeking, she said it is based on the ties to the EU and recognizing Morocco’s contribution to the neighborhood policies. An ad hoc committee was set up last July to frame the new contractual relationships which will replace the current agreements. This will all be done when the presidency of the EU rotates to France.
