Season for Surfing in Morocco

It may be approaching fall or winter time across most of the northern hemisphere, but in Morocco it’s approaching surf time. Surfs up in the land of a thousand-mile coastline with the best surfing months soon breaching. Pack your own board, rent or buy one, but come surf Morocco for some of the wickedest rides in Africa.

September to the end of April are the best months to surf the Atlantic Coast. With so many opportunities, however, you’re probably wondering where the best places are to spend your surf vacation. The most popular surf town for kitesurfing or windsurfing in Morocco, hands down, is Essaouira. Surfers have parked their VW campervans here for over two decades, catching some of the best waves in the region. If, however, you cherish reclusive freedom, then you should try some spots with just as many waves with not as many people. Known to be the spot where Jonah was spit up, Sidi Rabat, has a few inexpensive hotels and a consistently good beach break good for those long board days.

Another is Sidi Kaouki. A taxi or local bus ride takes you about 30km south where you’ll find excellent beaches and primal campsites. The surfable waves here are best on less windy days, though sometimes few and far between. If you want to relax away from it all, this is your wave central.

The next best place to surf if you want a hybrid of luxury and solitude is Aglou Plage or Mirhleft. From Tiznit, these two towns lie 16km north and 40km south respectively. In Aglou Plage, the remoteness makes it a bit deserted and at times windy with rubbish. Though there are places and camps, this may be the best place to try cave dwelling for a few nights. Mirhleft is a bit more popular and traveler friendly, though still peaceful, with just over a handful of hotels and conveniences.

Another popular beach is El-Jadida, but at times crowded with foreigners and locals alike. If this isn’t your surf and turf, then try Sidi Bouzid, just a few kilometers to the south with a bit more quiet- and cleanly-ness.

Though Essaouira and Agadir are the most popular, you’ll find nice beaches with rolling surf in Morocco. If you’re not into surfing, then kiteboarding or windsurfing in Morocco are alternatives east of Marrakech. Surf lessons are also available and surfing tours in Morocco are gaining popularity. If you want to see more of Morocco with some time for everything, perhaps a Morocco tour fits your plans. Morocco, though full of places undiscovered, might be the surf break you’ve been longing to ride.
