No terrorist attacks have occurred in
Morocco since the bombing of a restaurant
in Casablanca in May of 2003. The incident
sparked the government to increase their
police and military force, and to keep a
close eye on fundamental religious groups
in the country. Now, the Moroccan
government has stepped into the heart of
Morocco’s religious centers – their
mosques.
Muslim leaders in the country who wish to
build a new mosque will need special
permission and be required to jump through
several hoops to be allowed to construct
new religious centers. The authorities in
Morocco will now require any group wanting
a mosque to form an association. Following,
they will have to prove where the funding
for the mosque is coming from and who will
be in charge of overseeing that the proper
legal routes are followed.
Ahmed Toufiq, the country’s Minister on
Religious Affairs, saw that the bill was
passed rapidly through parliament. He was
reported as saying, "No one will now be
able to use places of worship for other
ends and there will be no more clandestine
mosques."
Some fundamental religious groups have
called the bill unfair stating that those
in rural villages will now have an even
harder time constructing places of worship.
