This itinerary for trekking in the High Atlas Mountains is flexible depending upon group travel plans. Get out and explore Morocco's less-touched regions in the mountains and valleys only a short drive from Marrakesh. It starts and ends in Marrakesh, with an optional Essaouira extension. Itinerary Outline:
Day 1: Pick Up Marrakesh | High Atlas Mountains
You will leave early this morning in order to begin your
hike at the Berber village of Imi Ourhlad (1,300 meters).
This area is known for its walnut trees, cherries, and
apples. You'll be hiking up the Tizi and Techt (2,200
meters) to Imi Nifri and stay the night in Tizi Oussem
(1,950 meters) in a small village gite with a traditional
hammam. Total walking time will be around four to five
hours.
Day 2: Refuge
Lipini
Today, you'll rise early to get started on our trail to
Azib Tamsoult (2, 100 meters). Here, enjoy a picnic by a
waterfall for lunch. The refuge of Lipini (3, 100 meters)
is close by, but day hikes around the area will be offered.
If visibility is clear, you'll be able to see the lights of
Marrakesh at night. The total walking time will be between
three and five hours, depending upon the activities you
choose.
Day
3: Mount Toubkal Basecamp
From the refuge, you'll hike to the Tizi Aguelzim (3, 500
meters) and down to the Mount Toubkal Neltner Basecamp (3,
208 meters). The total hiking time will be around five
hours.
Day 4: Summit Mount Toubkal
Today is the day you have all been waiting for! You'll get
up before dawn and start the ascent up Mount Toubkal in the
High Atlas Mountains (4, 167 meters). The climb takes about
three hours. Following the summit, we'll return to the
Neltner Basecamp for lunch. Following, you'll have the
afternoon to rest.
Day 5: Armed & Imlil in High Atlas Mountains
This morning, you'll depart from the Neltner basecamp and
head down to Armed & Imlil. After lunch and some time
exploring this unique Berber village in the High Atlas
Mountains, enjoy a night in the lodge talking about your
adventure. Those who would like a bit of luxury can opt to
spend this first night in the 5-star Kasbah du Toubkal
lodge.
Day 6: Marrakesh
Following breakfast, you'll head down to Imlil from Armed.
Once there, you will have transportation back to Marrakesh.
Those staying in the Kasbh du Toubkal lodge will have one
more night as the hotel has a two night minimum stay. Those
choosing this option would depart the next morning.
