Meet Morocco Expert Lucas Peters
As long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to travel and experience as much of our world as possible. I grew up in Tukwila, Washington, near Seattle, beneath the flight paths of thousands of planes. From my childhood home I watched them come and go from Sea-Tac airport to places unknown. I didn’t know much about the world. But I did know that I wanted to go to those places unknown.
After finishing my studies at the University of Washington, I fled Seattle as quickly as possible. Though I am most known for living in Morocco, which I have called home for well over a decade, I have also lived for extended amounts of time in San Francisco, Key West, London, Prague, and Paris, on a couple of occasions. My family also keeps a home in Andalusia, Spain, where my parents have retired.
That expertise has found its way onto the page. I am the author of several Moon Travel Guides titles, including Moon Seville & Andalusia and Moon Grand European Journeys — and, most relevantly for you, Moon Morocco, now in its brand-new 4th edition, out July 28, 2026. Writing these guides means translating hard-won, on-the-ground expertise into something entertaining and genuinely useful — the kind of insight you simply can’t get from a desk. I’ve been fortunate that many of my own photographs grace the pages of these full-color guides as well.
In 2009 I moved from San Francisco to Morocco and have been on this side of the Atlantic ever since. After two years working as an editor for a wire service in the Bay Area — minimal vacation, that relentless cost of living — I was ready for a change. I started applying to teaching jobs anywhere and everywhere, including a small university tucked into the folds of the Middle Atlas Mountains that I had never heard of in a country I had never visited. I took the job. When my plane landed, all of my luggage was lost. I spent my first two weeks in Morocco in the middle of Ramadan, shopping in the local markets for food, clothing, and basic necessities without speaking a word of the local language. It was an unexpected, total immersion — and I fell completely in love with the country.
For the next decade, Morocco became my classroom as much as my home. My first six years were spent in Ifrane, a small, storybook mountain town in the Middle Atlas, teaching literature and composition at Al Akhawayn University. I traveled every corner of the country during those years — from the date groves of the Sahara to the fishing villages along the Atlantic Coast, from the labyrinthine medina of Fez to the windswept beaches of Essaouira. Along the way I picked up a bit of the language, made lifelong friends, and married my wife, a Tanjaioua — a woman of Tangier. In 2019 we moved north to Tangier, the city that has been our home ever since, a place where Africa and Europe eye each other across the narrow Strait of Gibraltar and the whole world feels within reach.
Today I live in Tangier with my talented, patient, superhero wife and our ten-year-old, LEGO-loving, fromage-stuffing, class-clowning, über-precocious ninja-in-training son and our six-year-old daughter who twirls her way through a world of Arabic, English, French, and Spanish, giggling all the while.

“Our Italy trip with JBT was absolutely unforgettable. From the moment Alexei crafted our detailed, personalized itinerary — even pulling off a last-minute hot air balloon ride for my niece — we knew we were in the best hands. Each day was filled with extraordinary experiences, from private tours of Rome and Florence’s greatest treasures to a pasta-making class and a Chianti winery lunch. Our guides were exceptional, our hotels perfectly located and welcoming, and every driver and detail seamless.
