Day 1: Porto

Start your day with a traditional Portuguese breakfast—freshly baked pastéis de nata (custard tarts) and a strong espresso. Take a private guided tour of Porto’s historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and explore the Ribeira district, where colorful buildings line the Douro River. Visit the iconic São Bento train station, adorned with beautiful azulejo tiles, and the Clerigos Tower for panoramic city views.

For lunch, indulge in a Francesinha, Porto’s famous sandwich layered with cured meats, melted cheese, and a rich beer-based sauce.

In the afternoon, cross the Dom Luís I Bridge to Vila Nova de Gaia and visit a historic port wine cellar for a tasting of the region’s world-renowned fortified wine. Enjoy a scenic sunset cruise along the Douro River before dining at a traditional Portuguese seafood restaurant.

Day 2: Douro Valley

After breakfast, depart for the Douro Valley, one of the world’s oldest wine regions. Stop at a family-run vineyard for a private tour and wine tasting, learning about traditional winemaking methods. Continue to the charming town of Pinhão, where you can explore the picturesque train station decorated with blue-and-white azulejos depicting vineyard scenes.

For lunch, savor a meal overlooking the river, featuring roasted bacalhau (salted cod) paired with a local red wine. In the afternoon, take a relaxing boat ride along the Douro River, passing through terraced vineyards and rolling hills.

Return to Porto in the evening and unwind with a light meal of petiscos (Portuguese tapas) at a cozy bar.

Day 3: Braga & Guimarães

Head north to Braga, known as the “Rome of Portugal” for its stunning baroque churches. Begin at Bom Jesus do Monte, a breathtaking hilltop sanctuary with an ornate zigzagging staircase. Explore Braga’s historic center, visiting landmarks like the Sé de Braga (Portugal’s oldest cathedral) and the lively Praça da República.

For lunch, try bacalhau à braga, a local codfish specialty.

In the afternoon, continue to Guimarães, the birthplace of Portugal. Wander through its medieval streets, visit the well-preserved Guimarães Castle, and explore the Paço dos Duques de Bragança, a 15th-century ducal palace.

Return to Porto for a relaxed evening with a glass of vinho verde and a plate of grilled sardines.

Day 4: Viana do Castelo & Ponte de Lima

Travel to Viana do Castelo, a coastal gem known for its stunning architecture and maritime history. Visit the hilltop Sanctuary of Santa Luzia for breathtaking views over the Atlantic. Explore the city center, filled with Manueline-style buildings and quaint cafés.
For lunch, try arroz de sarrabulho, a northern Portuguese rice dish.

In the afternoon, head to Ponte de Lima, Portugal’s oldest village. Stroll along the scenic Roman bridge and explore its charming streets. Visit a local vineyard for a tasting of vinho verde, the crisp and slightly effervescent wine that defines the region.

Return to Porto for a casual dinner of grilled octopus or arroz de marisco (seafood rice).

Day 5: Aveiro & Coimbra

Depart for Aveiro, often called the “Venice of Portugal,” where you’ll take a traditional moliceiro boat ride through the colorful canals. Try ovos moles, the city’s signature egg-yolk-filled pastry.

Continue to Coimbra, home to Portugal’s oldest university. Visit the University of Coimbra’s breathtaking Joanina Library and explore the medieval streets of the old town.

For lunch, enjoy leitão à Bairrada (suckling pig), a specialty of the region.

In the afternoon, take a leisurely walk through the Botanical Garden or visit the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Velha.

Return to Porto for a relaxed evening.

Day 6: Serra da Estrela

Set out for the Serra da Estrela, Portugal’s highest mountain range. Enjoy a scenic drive through rugged landscapes, dotted with traditional stone villages and grazing sheep.

Visit the charming village of Piódão, known for its schist houses and narrow alleys.

For lunch, try queijo da serra, a rich and creamy sheep’s milk cheese.

In the afternoon, take a short hike to admire the stunning views of the mountain peaks and glacial valleys.

Stay overnight in a mountain lodge, where you can enjoy a cozy dinner featuring hearty Portuguese mountain cuisine.

Day 7: Viseu & Lamego

After breakfast, travel to Viseu, a city known for its historical charm and artistic heritage. Stroll through the picturesque old town, visiting the Sé de Viseu Cathedral and the Grão Vasco Museum.

For lunch, try cabrito assado (roast kid goat), a regional favorite.

In the afternoon, head to Lamego, where you’ll climb the grand staircase of the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, a beautiful baroque pilgrimage site.

Return to Porto for a relaxed evening by the Douro River.

 

Day 8: Porto & Matosinhos

Spend your final full day exploring more of Porto. Visit the Lello Bookstore, often considered one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world. Walk along Rua das Flores, a lively street lined with shops and cafés.

For lunch, take a short trip to Matosinhos, Porto’s seafood haven, where you can enjoy the freshest grilled fish and shellfish at a local restaurant.

Spend your afternoon at the beach or visit the Serralves Museum, a contemporary art museum set in a stunning modernist villa.

Return to Porto for a farewell dinner, toasting with a glass of aged port wine.

Day 9: Departure

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before heading to the airport or train station, saying “Até breve!” to your unforgettable journey through Northern Portugal.
