Anika Truter - Iceland Expert

Anika has been living and working in Iceland since 2015 and is a full Icelandic citizen.

She has spent most of that time as a Travel Expert, planning vacations for the most discerning guests. She was born in South Africa but spent most of her life in Vancouver, Canada. That is, before moving full time to Iceland. After moving to the West fjords for a year (one of the most remote parts of Iceland), she was meant to go back to Canada, but a decade later, she is still in Iceland. Iceland truly is her home now. She has an undergraduate degree in business administration and a masters degree in coastal and marine resource management with a focus on tourist safety in Iceland, even working for the Icelandic search and Rescue team in the past. She has spent a lot of time hiking in Iceland’s most remote areas and seems to know every hidden spot in the country. Feel free to test her on her unbeatable knowledge. Her favorite hiking spots in Iceland include Hornstrandir Nature Reserve in the West fjords and Dórsmörk in the southern highlands. In between planning tailor-made experiences for her guests, she enjoys walking through Reykjavik’s botanical gardens and trying out Iceland’s newest natural spas.

Introduction to Iceland

Iceland is a stunning Nordic island nation located in the North Atlantic Ocean. Known for its dramatic landscapes, including volcanoes, geysers, hot springs, and lava fields, Iceland is a parliamentary republic where a President serves as the head of state, and the Prime Minister is the head of government. As of my last update in September 2021, Guðni Th. Jóhannesson held the presidency.

With a rich history that dates back to the Viking era, Iceland has a unique cultural legacy. The Icelandic language, a North Germanic language, has changed little since the time of the Vikings, with fewer than 400,000 speakers primarily residing on the island. Traditional folklore, featuring elves and trolls, still plays a role in the country’s cultural identity.

Christianity is the dominant religion in Iceland, with the Evangelical Lutheran Church being the state church. Many cultural events and national celebrations, including Þorrablót (a midwinter festival) and Iceland’s National Day, reflect the country’s strong sense of community and national pride.

In contemporary times, Iceland is recognized for its progressive values, environmental sustainability, and focus on gender equality. The people of Iceland are often described as friendly, welcoming, and deeply connected to nature.

The Icelandic culinary scene is notable for its emphasis on fresh, local ingredients. Traditional dishes include harðfiskur (dried fish), skyr (a type of yogurt), and various lamb preparations. The country is also famous for its geothermal energy, which enables sustainability in various sectors, including agriculture and the production of hot water for domestic use.

Iceland’s unique geography includes extensive glaciers, rugged mountains, and breathtaking fjords. The climate is classified as subarctic, with cool summers and mild winters influenced by the North Atlantic Current. Visitors can explore natural wonders like Þingvellir National Park, the Golden Circle, and the Blue Lagoon, attracting nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike.

In terms of attire, Icelanders typically dress in a casual and functional manner suitable for the changing weather. Layers are encouraged, especially for outdoor activities, and it’s advisable for visitors to dress appropriately for the varied climate conditions.

Whether you’re wandering the charming streets of Reykjavík, exploring the vast wilderness, or witnessing the mesmerizing Northern Lights, Iceland offers an unforgettable experience immersed in stunning landscapes and rich traditions.

Geography

Iceland, despite its relatively small size, features a diverse and captivating landscape covering an area of 103,000 square kilometers (39,768 square miles). Stretching approximately 300 kilometers (186 miles) from north to south, this island nation is home to some of the most striking geological formations in the world.

The country is defined by its volcanic activity, with about 30 active volcanic systems, including notable ones such as Hekla and Eyjafjallajökull. It also boasts numerous glaciers, including Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in Europe. The rugged terrain features geothermal hot springs, vast lava fields, stunning waterfalls like Gullfoss, and black sand beaches, particularly around Vik.

Iceland is surrounded by the North Atlantic Ocean and has a coastline that extends for about 4,970 kilometers (3,089 miles). Its fjord-like inlets and picturesque peninsulas offer countless opportunities for exploration. The island’s interior remains largely uninhabited and consists of highlands, barren plateaus, and areas with varying climates influenced by its proximity to the ocean.

The climate is predominantly subarctic, with considerable variability due to the island’s geographical features. The coastal areas enjoy milder temperatures compared to the interior, which can experience harsher winters. The weather can change rapidly, so visitors should be prepared for all seasons in a single day.

In terms of natural wonders, Iceland is famous for the Golden Circle, which includes Þingvellir National Park, the geothermal area in Haukadalur (home to the geysers Strokkur and Geysir), and the roaring Gullfoss waterfall. The island also showcases a plethora of wildlife, including various bird species, seals, and migratory whales along the coasts.

Money & Shopping

In Iceland, handling cash and making transactions is generally straightforward, particularly in urban areas. ATMs are widely available, and credit cards are accepted at most businesses, including smaller shops, restaurants, and hotels. It’s recommended to inform your card provider of your travel plans to avoid issues with international transactions.

Although cash is less commonly used, some local markets or remote areas may still prefer it, so carrying a small amount of Icelandic króna (ISK) is advisable. Most tourists use credit or debit cards for convenience.

Prices in Iceland can be higher than in many other countries due to its remote location and limited resources. While haggling is not customary, visitors can find unique Icelandic crafts, wool products, and locally sourced goods in shops around Reykjavík and at local markets.

Traveler’s checks are becoming increasingly less common, so relying on cards or cash for purchases will provide a smoother experience. Iceland’s vibrant shopping scene offers everything from high-end fashion to unique local souvenirs, such as traditional wool sweaters and handcrafted jewelry.

Internet, Phone, Post, and Health

In Iceland, internet access is widely available, especially in urban centers. Many cafés, restaurants, and hotels offer free Wi-Fi to customers. Mobile data coverage is generally good, even in more remote areas, allowing travelers to stay connected during their visit.

Visitors can purchase prepaid SIM cards to access data and local phone services. Networks like Síminn and Vodafone operate in Iceland, and it’s advisable to choose a SIM plan that suits your communication needs. Unlocked phones will work with local SIM cards.

Iceland’s country code is +354, and it generally operates on a standard voltage of 230V with European-style plug sockets. If traveling from a region with different electrical standards, a plug adapter may be necessary.

Postal services are reliable in Iceland, with post offices and collection boxes available in towns. Sending letters and postcards is straightforward, and postage rates are reasonable compared to other countries.

Iceland has a high-quality healthcare system. In emergencies, dial 112. While most healthcare professionals in larger cities speak English, it’s advisable for travelers to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical expenses. Pharmacies (apótek) are widely available, stocked with both prescription and over-the-counter medications.

For all travelers, it’s wise to carry any necessary medications in their original packaging and familiarize themselves with local regulations regarding prescription drugs to avoid complications during their stay. The public health system is well-equipped to assist both locals and visitors.

With its enchanting landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and warm-hearted people, Iceland promises an extraordinary experience for travelers seeking adventure and beauty in one of the world’s most unique destinations.
