Day 1: Arrival in Podgorica
Welcome to Montenegro’s capital! Settle into your accommodation and take a leisurely stroll through the city center. Visit the Millennium Bridge and the historic Clock Tower. For dinner, savor local dishes like cevapi (grilled minced meat) and kacamak (a hearty polenta dish) at a traditional restaurant.
Day 2: Podgorica to Kotor
Breakfast, Scenic Drive (1 hr)
Depart for the enchanting coastal town of Kotor, nestled along the fjord-like Bay of Kotor. En route, consider stopping at the Lipa Cave, one of Montenegro’s largest karst caves. Upon arrival in Kotor, check into your accommodation within the fortified Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Spend the afternoon exploring the labyrinthine streets, discovering hidden squares, and visiting the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon. For dinner, enjoy fresh seafood at a waterfront restaurant.
Day 3: Explore Kotor and Perast
Breakfast, Boat Excursion
Start your day with a hike up to the San Giovanni Fortress for panoramic views of the bay. Later, take a short drive or boat ride to the nearby town of Perast, known for its baroque architecture. From Perast, visit the iconic Our Lady of the Rocks island church. Return to Kotor in the evening and perhaps experience the local nightlife.
Day 4: Kotor to Budva via Sveti Stefan
Breakfast, Coastal Drive (1 hr)
Head south along the Adriatic coast to the vibrant town of Budva, famed for its beaches and nightlife. En route, stop at the picturesque islet of Sveti Stefan, a former fishing village turned luxury resort. While the island is exclusive, the adjacent beaches offer excellent photo opportunities. In Budva, explore the charming Old Town, relax on Mogren Beach, and dine at a seaside restaurant.
Day 5: Budva to Lake Skadar
Breakfast, Scenic Drive (1 hr)
Journey inland to Lake Skadar National Park, the largest lake in the Balkans, renowned for its biodiversity and bird-watching opportunities. Take a boat tour to explore the lake’s tranquil waters, visit the Kom Monastery, and perhaps spot Dalmatian pelicans. Enjoy a lakeside lunch featuring local specialties like freshwater fish and raštej (cornbread). Overnight in a nearby village or return to Budva.
Day 6: Budva to Cetinje and Lovcen National Park
Breakfast, Mountain Drive (1.5 hrs)
Drive to Cetinje, the historical capital of Montenegro. Visit the Cetinje Monastery and the National Museum to delve into the country’s rich history. Continue to Lovcen National Park, where you can hike to the Njegoš Mausoleum, perched atop Mount Lovcen, offering breathtaking views. Return to Budva or stay overnight in the park’s vicinity.
Day 7: Budva to Žabljak
Breakfast, Scenic Drive (3 hrs)
Depart for the mountainous region of Žabljak, the gateway to Durmitor National Park. En route, consider stopping at the Ostrog Monastery, an important pilgrimage site set into a vertical cliff. Upon arrival in Žabljak, settle into your accommodation and take a leisurely walk around the town.
Day 8: Durmitor National Park Exploration
Breakfast, Outdoor Activities
Spend the day exploring Durmitor National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Hike around the stunning Black Lake, go rafting in the Tara River Canyon, the deepest canyon in Europe, or try zip-lining across the canyon for an adrenaline rush. In the evening, enjoy a hearty mountain meal featuring local cheeses and meats.
Day 9: Žabljak to Podgorica via Moraca Canyon
Breakfast, Scenic Drive (2.5 hrs)
Begin your return journey to Podgorica, driving through the dramatic Moraca Canyon. Stop to visit the Moraca Monastery, one of Montenegro’s most significant Orthodox monasteries. Continue to Podgorica for your final night, perhaps exploring any sites you missed on Day 1.
Day 10: Departure from Podgorica
Depending on your flight schedule, enjoy a leisurely morning in Podgorica. Visit the Ribnica Bridge, shop for last-minute souvenirs, or relax in a local café before heading to the airport.
Optional Extensions:
- Ulcinj (2–3 nights): Explore this southern coastal town known for its long sandy beaches and rich history influenced by various cultures.
